Protecting Earthworms

Natural Enemies of Earthworms:

Natural enemies of earthworms are moles, ants, centipedes, mice, rats, mites, gophers, toads, snakes and birds. Rat poison such as d-CON can be used against rat. Using calcium carbonate to make the bedding sweet will discourage insect’s pest since insect pests like sour environments, another way of controlling insect infestations is using an Ortho insecticide called Diazinon Insect Spray on top of bedding can be effective, but do not water or feed the earthworms for several days after its applications.

Winter protection for Earthworms:

Protecting earthworm breeding pits against frost is important to keep the earthworm from freezing, in colder areas, pits should be deeper than in warmer areas of around two feet below ground level, cover earthworm pits with 3 inches of compost mixture on top as well as the side, then on top of the compost place 2 inches of damp garden top soil. The pits should not be disturbed for the whole duration of the extreme freeze season.
