HOW TO PROLONG THE BLOOMING SEASON OF DAHLIA

Deadheading dahlia regularly every three to four days will lengthen the blooming season of your dahlia by several extra weeks.

HOW TO PROPAGATE DAHLIA

Buying new dahlias plant cultivars each year can really break a bank. Single tubers could cost $5.00 to $10.00. Fortunately, the Propagation of Dahlia is not difficult, it can be Propagated by the following ways described below:

Propagation by tubers’ division: The Propagation of Dahlia by tuber division is not difficult, it can be done by dividing tubers from a clump of tubers into single tuber. The clumps of swollen roots of Dahlias are called tubers. Tubers which forms part of the root system of Dahlias can be lifted from the ground after the flowering is over and leaves have dried out, during autumn or late autumn depending to the weather. The clumps of tubers can be divided by separating the clumps into single tubers right after lifting. Most common division of tubers is done in early spring right before re-planting the sprouted tubers into pots then transferring them into the ground during spring when the danger of frost is over. This is usually the time to plant potatoes and tomatoes.

Propagation by cuttings: shoot cuttings can multiply The Dahlias easily or rapidly. The top tender portion of a new shoot comprising of two pairs of leaves or two nodes should be cut with a sharp blade just below a leaf joint. At least one pair of leaves should be left below the cut to give the Dahlia plant the produce more new sprout. Cuttings of Dahlias sprout that has at least two pairs of leaves right above the ground of the tubers, usually a few millimeters below ground can also be done with success. All cuttings may then be dipped into rooting hormone, then, planted immediately into well drained moist soil that are partially shaded. Water it vigorously until the shoot cuttings’ leaves have started to grow bigger and new leaves sprout out which is usually around a week’s time after the planting of the shoots.

Propagation by seeds: Planting Dahlia seeds into seedlings is also another possible alternative of propagation, although it will take longer to flower; it is a very easy way to produce hybrids out of the cross-pollination of different species of dahlia flowers. Plant the Dahlia Seeds from flowers into moist seedling medium. At around 70 to 90 degree F temperature with some sunlight, seedlings should be able to develop. Then replant the seedlings into your garden when there is no frost or when the temperature is warm enough for potato to be planted.
