Earthworms & DaffodilsGROWING DAFFODILS or Narcissus / jonquil CLASSIFICATIONS OF DAFFODILS: The Royal Horticultural Society of England has established 12 divisions of Daffodils or Narcissus : Division 1: Trumpet daffodils. Corona as long or longer than the perianth segments; one flower to each stem. King Alfred is considered the most popular trumpet daffodils. Division 2: Large-cupped daffodils. Corona shorter than the perianth segments, but always more than one-third their length; one flower to each stem. Division 3: Small-cupped daffodils. Corona no more than one-third the length of the perianth segments; one flower top each stem. Division 5: Triandrus Hybrids. Derivatives of N. triandrus. Corona at least two-thirds the length of the perianth segments; several flowers to each stem. Some popular hybrids are: april tears, arish mell, buddock bells, hawera, horn of plenty, ice wings, icicle, lapwing, lemon drops, liberty bells, merry bells, mission bells, niveth, petrel, silver bells, thalia, and tuesday’s child. Division 6: Cyclamineus Hybrids. Derivatives of N. cyclamineus; early-flowering forms carrying one flower on each stem. Perianth segments are recurved as though facing a strong headwind; February Gold is the most popular of this breed. Some popular hybrids are: alliance, bartley, carib, cazique, charity may, cotinga, february gold, february silver, foundling, georgie girl, inca, itzim, jack snipe, jenny, jetfire, lavander lass, lilac charm, mite, peeping tom, penril, peppercorn, rapture, reggae, rival, roscarrick, satelite, snoopie, surfside, swift arrow, tracey, trena, and whang hi. Division 7: Jonquilla Hybrids. Derivatives of N. jonquilla. Each stem bears two to four small, fragrant flowers. Foliage is often rustle. Some popular hybrids are: baby moon, bell song, bobbysoxer, boscastle, buffawn, bunting, chit chat, curlew, dickcissel, eland, goldfinch, high note, hillstar, hoopoe, indian maid, intrigue, kingler, la belle, logan rock, martinette, mountjoy, new-baby, odorus rugulosus, oryx, penstraze, pet finch, pink angel, pipit, pixie, pixie sister, pueblo, quail, quickstep, rosemoor gold, rugulosus, sugarbush, sun disc, suzy, sweet blanche, sweetness, little-tattle, trevithian, walton, waterperry, and wheal coates. Division 8: Tazetta & Tazetta Hybriss. Derivatives of N. tazetta. Hardy to about 10 degree F / -12 degree C. this division includes all the early flowering types known as narcissus. Each stem bears four to eight or more highly fragrant flowers with short coronas. Many types of this division have a white perianth and yellow corona. Other color combinations are known. N. tazetta Orientalis called the Chinese sacred lily, has a light yellow perianth and a darker yellow corona. Division 9: Poeticus narcissus. Derivatives of N. poetricus. The parianth segments are white; very short, broad corona is in a contrasting color, usually with red edges. |
